You will charm immediately by her impressive architecture which is perhaps the unique classic city that has remained in Greece. An architecture of that witness the history of Syros that begins from the ancient years and leads in today. A combination of old with the new, classic with the modern.
Ermoupolis is the biggest of the Cycladic towns and also the Capital of the islandgroup. The waterfront and its environments is backed by two hills, each topped with a church (set in heavy lights if you arrive during the night), one Roman Catholic and the other Orthodox. On the hill, above the town is situated the picturesque settlement of Ano Syros, of which until today, the cycladic medieval architecture has remained untouched over the years.
The town extends around the large, natural harbour and it is distinguished for its imposing beauty of neoclassical marble building, of which still, today constitute the architectural decoration and create an admiration for the visitor.
Here is also a museum dedicated to Markos Vamvakaris, a composer of traditional Rebetika music. There are music festivals every summer in this village.
You should also try to get to Ano Syros, a small village in medieval style. Here you can visit the Catholic Cathedral of St George and the monasteries of the Jesuits and Capucins from the 18th and 17th century respectively a little further away.
The picturesque fishing village of Kini is also west of Ermoupolis and a few kilometres from Galissas. Kini is well known for its beautiful beach, succulent sea food and magnificent sunsets, where the sunlight sparkles off the white houses dotted along the bay, where small fishing boats float on the deep blue surface of the sea and the hills of Pano Meria creating a perfect backdrop.
Right in front of the settlement of the same name and protected from the winds, Galissas is one of Syros' best beaches. It extends for about 1km and it's full of tamarisk trees.
Syros is located close to Piraeus port (the trip by ferry takes only 4 hours) and there is a connection by ferry with Rafina, Paros, Naxos, Tinos, Mykonos, Ios, Santorini, and other Cycladic islands. It is also connected with Athens by plane.
