Sikinos

There are many beautiful and famous islands situated all over the Greek seas, where you can enjoy relaxing, rewarding and unique holidays.

With the blue waters of the Aegean Sea, the Cyclades islands are amongst the most famous and picturesque, and provide a wonderful selection of popular holiday destinations.

It is the southern region of the Cyclades islands that you will find the charming and beautiful island of Sikinos.

The capital of Sikinos is Chora ( Hora ) and it is located 3.5km from the port. Built at the edge of a cliff overlooking the coast, the inhabitants of the old days were able to shelter in the monastery of Zoodohou Pigis, providing them with better protection against pirate raids. It really consists of two villages, an old and a new one. The old part is also called Chorio ("Village") and the new Kastro. Here, you'll find a small folklore museum and a quite impressive church from the 18th century. There are only two metal roads plus a few well-maintained dirt roads on the island however at the time of our Sikinos Holiday they were building another road through to one of the beaches and another road was planned going the other way from the port both of which we understand will be tarmac.

The island has some beautiful scenery but the harsh and infertile land has created conditions of hunger and poverty for the local population in the past. Vines, olives and figs are grown here but stock farming and fishing are the primary sources of income (with tourism slowly starting to creep but not on the scale to be seen in neighbouring Ios or on the hugely popular Cycladic islands of Mykonos and Santorini).

From Piraeus port you can travel by ship to Sikinos with 8 hours travel time.  During the summer time daily itineraries are executed.
