Vacances dans les îles grecques : toutes les informations pour bien préparer votre voyage

Rhodes

It is one of the largest and most beautiful Greek islands. Its landscape mainly comprises of hills and low mountains, which in their majority are covered with forests. It's climate is subtropical and healthy. Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. The beauty of Rhodes town is the old town with the medieval castles ,houses and streets. At the port the visitor will find Mandraki with its circular Market and the Cafes at the seafront ,further on are the Art Deco buildings of the Metropolis from the times of the Italian occupation. At the entrance of the port are the famous two columns with the two Deers at the place where supposed to be the colossus of Rhodes .The ancient city of Lindos is another of the main attraction of the island.

Rhodes today offers the visitor a plethora of all year round leisure alternatives, covering all types of tourist activity. The natural beauty of the island, the monuments from her long and often turbulent history, a rodosmopolitan character, as well as the warm hospitality generously offered by the people of Rhodes, and an excellent tourist infrastructure boasting the most modern hotels, all captivate the visitor.

The island's classical past can be explored at the ancient sites of Kamiros, Ialyssos and Lindos. Medieval fortresses to rival any in the world can be found at Rhodes, Lindos and Monolithos. Castles galore come courtesy of the Crusaders.

Parts of Rhodes suffer tourism of almost frenzied proportions, laced with rampant commercialism. Those looking for a quieter Greek holiday will head south where the island quickly dissolves into a backwater of dirt roads and unspoilt villages.

 Lindos
Lindos

Most visitors of the island's east coast flow to Lindos (47 km from the city of Rhodes), built on the ruins of the ancient Doric town of the same name. In medieval times Lindos was the second most important centre of the island, after the city of Rhodes itself. The ancient Acropolis was then built into a castle. It is said that St. Paul the Apostle landed here when he came to the island of Rhodes; accordingly, the tiny harbour on the other side of the village has been named 'Agios Pavlos'.

The acropolis of Lindos is built on a precipitous rock soaring 116 m and dominating the village. It is a real balcony with a view over the sea. The monuments there are evidence of the power and wealth of Lindos over the ages.
At Lindos Beach one can enjoy the deep blue sea. Aghios Pavlos Bay south of the acropolis is also pretty.
