Vacances dans les îles grecques : toutes les informations pour bien préparer votre voyage

Mykonos

Mykonos is definitely the most famous, thanks to its treasure of natural beauty, rich history, cosmopolitan character combined with a wild nightlife, as well as plenty of local color. There are 9,320 inhabitants, most of whom live in the largest town, Mykonos, also known as Chora. Mykonos is, with Santorini and Crete, the most famous and popular Greek islands and attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is also an island with beautiful landscapes, picturesque white painted villages, hundreds of little churches, windmills and some of the most extraordinary golden sandy beaches in the Cyclades. The mykonos island has spectacular beaches with crystal clear green color water. Many Greek and international celebrities have summer residences in Mykonos (as santorini also) and can often be seen walking the white-washed roads or having dinner at a small street-side table of an expensive restaurant or a taverna.

Mykonos Town (Chora), the islands capital, will impress visitors from the moment they first step their feet on its ground. Around narrow, whitewashed streets there are white cubicle houses clustered, with their tiny balconies, colored windows and liliput yards lined by bougainvillea and pots of basilicum. But Mykonos Town holds more for everyone. Especially in Matoyianni, its most commercial street, where a multitude of quaint little shops, with brand name clothes, original jewelry, handicrafts, and souvenirs, will hold you captive for hours. Of all the churches in the town of Mykonos, the most famous internationally is the majestic structure of Paraportiani. From both an architectural and photographic point of view the organic lines that make up this building are truly unique.

When the crowds have departed, it is then that Mykonos can best be enjoyed as the tiny Cycladic fishing village it has always been. During the summer months the temperature may occasionally reach the upper 30's but due to the cooling factor of the frequent winds an average of 28°C can be expected. Winters on the island are mild with an average temperature of 15°. There are no rivers to speak of but of its many seasonal streams two have been harnessed by dams to create sizable reservoirs. Despite its small area, part of Mykonos' fame comes from the fact that it has over twenty accessible sandy beaches earning the name "Capri of Greece".

The beaches on the south shore of the island have the best sand, view and are protected from the Meltemi, the local Cycladic wind. Keep in mind that most people begin to arrive in the early afternoon, and you can avoid the worst of the crowds by going in the morning. The north coast beaches are less developed but just as beautiful. They are less organized and crowded and most suitable for those in search of a bit of calm.

There are two ports near Athens: Pireus (94 nm from Mykonos) and Rafina (71 nm from Mykonos), both with a Regular and High Speed Ferry boat service to and from Mykonos.

Athens - Mykonos - Athens, there are regular flights throughout the summer. The Airport of Mykonos is situated 4 km from the Town (Hora) so the transfer is taken care by Olympic Airways busses, local bus service and taxis.
→ Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Santorini and Crete, there are regular flights to and from Mykonos during the summer season.
