Anafi island is at a far remove from the rapid pace of modern development, at the edge of the Cyclades, sobered by the Aegean sun and sea salt, isolated in its simplicity.
Visitors will fall permanently in love with the unique landscape and the wonderful hospitality offered by the friendly islanders. This island has been ignored by most holiday makers for a very long time, but has become quite popular the last years. It is very small, harsh island with steep cliffs offering spectacular views of the sea and unforgettable sunsets.
Anafi has only one village (Hora) and a few houses located around the island's port. The port and the village are connected by a road. Buses from the port to the village operate twice per day. (morning/afternoon) You can get to Hora on a scenic footpath (starting at the port) as well. (1 1/2 hour) Further roads connect Hora with the east and the west of the island. Anafi is quite mountainous and numerous footpaths link all places (especially the beaches).
Even more splendid are the dune backed sands of Roukounas, an hours walk east of Klissidi. Monastiri beach and the coves of Katalimatsa are even further east but all within walking distance.
The monastery of Our Lady 'Kalamiotissa' (18th century, standing in the precinct of a temple of Apollo Aegletus), the Venetian castle near Hora, and the church of St Athanasius are among the special sights.
The beaches of Anafi, whether sandy or pebbly, are lapped by crystal-clear water.
The local religious feasts are very lively, and so are the island dances.
